Phi Graphic Design Contest

See ENTRIES RECEIVED to date.  Some beautiful images have been submitted.  Can you come up with something that's as good or better?

The objective is not just to create an image of something that contains of phi, but to help the viewer to see, understand and appreciate phi, to communicate in an image what phi is and what it's all about.

This could be in nature, art, architecture, mathematics, geometry, the stock market or a collage of it all.  See suggested content below.

Create an "Aha!" moment so that others say "Phi!  Now I get it!"  There's still time to win, so read the CONTEST RULES below for more details.

What You Win

Your choice of a check for US $100 or a Golden Mean Gauge (Basic Model, shipping and taxes included).

Posting of your image, and, if you desire, your name and/or your web site on GoldenNumber.net.  (This site gets close to 1 million hits per year, so that could draw some nice traffic to you or your business.)

A letter of congratulations and recognition of your accomplishment from the developer of this site, Gary Meisner, aka The Phi Guy.

Three honorable mention prize winners will be awarded a free copy of PhiMatrix software.

Contest Overview

The fine print is all below, but here are the key points you won't want to miss:

Create a visually appealing image or design that communicates something on what Phi, the Fibonacci Series and/or the Golden Section are all about and/or where they apply to life and the universe.

Your image can be in gif, jpg, png, tiff or bitmap format.  It can be in portrait or landscape format.  It should be at least 1024 pixels in size, preferably 2000 pixels to accommodate larger screens or printing.

Don't use copyrighted images in creating your entry.

Send your image via e-mail to

Include your name in the e-mail (so that you can be contacted if you win) and, if you desire, your local address and website address.

If your image is an abstract, write something about how it relates to phi in your e-mail so we don't miss it.

Entries become property of GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) and may be used for any purpose.

Contest ends on April 30, 2006 and the winner will be announced and prize will be awarded in May 2006.

Contest Details

The goal of the contest is to create the an original graphic design or image that best illustrates concepts related to phi, the Fibonacci series and the Golden Section.

In other words, what can you come up with that best COMMUNICATES what Phi, the Fibonacci Series and the Golden Section are all about and/or where they apply to life and the universe?

Create something that is visually engaging and has artistic appeal, something that people would want to have as desktop wallpaper for their PC or even hanging on their wall.

The content and design of your entry is entirely up to you, but potential elements include:

• The Greek letter Phi
• The number 1.61803398874989...., or 1.618 for short.
• The Fibonacci Series:  0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 ,34, 55, 89, 144...
• Proportions for dimensions of the image or components of the image that reflect golden sections or Fibonacci numbers.
• The words Phi, Fibonacci, Golden Section, Golden Ratio, Golden Number or Divine Proportion
• A human face or body, or elements thereof
• Examples of non-copyrighted art or architecture that embody phi
• A nautilus shell or other sea shells
• Golden rectangles
• Golden or Fibonacci spirals
• Animals with golden section proportions
• Plants that embody phi proportions or Fibonacci numbers
• A DNA helix
• The spiral arms of a galaxy
• The Parthenon or other works of art and architecture that use the golden section
• The human face and body
• Geometric constructions of the Golden Section (See the Geometry page)
• A pentagon or pentagram
• A dodecahedron or an isocahedron
• A "Golden Ruler" or "Golden Grid" (See the Life page)
• A piano keyboard
• Bucky balls or a soccer ball
• Saturn's rings
• A stock market chart
• Mathematical formulas such as:

2	=	+ 1
1/	=	- 1
√5+1 2

These are just suggestions so don't feel you need to use any or all of them.  Please refrain from using Penrose tiles, as these are protected by copyright.  Don't feel you have to use images from this site as many are not in high enough resolution to meet the image requirements.  When it's done, it should be a visually interesting and artistically pleasing image that can be used to explain something of what phi is about and inspire deeper exploration into the topic.

Contest Rules

All images submitted or included in a submission must be free of royalty and / or copyright restrictions.

All images must be submitted as an attached digital image file via e-mail to and include your name (so that you can be contacted if you win) and, if you desire, your local address and website address.

Filenames should include whatever title or name you wish to have it identified by if your entry is posted to this site.  An example is phispirals.jpg or doe-jane-mysitedotcom.jpg.

Digital images submitted must be in a gif, jpg, png, tiff or bitmap format.

Images can be in a landscape or portrait orientation must be no smaller than 1024 pixels in their largest dimension, preferably 2,000 pixels to accommodate larger screens or printing.

Entry information, contestant data and images become the property of GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) upon contest submission. We reserve the right to modify any images for the purposes of formatting and publishing.

Each entrant grants GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) and its successors, licensees, assigns and agents, the right to use the entrant's image without additional compensation in advertising, promotions or other commercial applications.  Contest entries may be offered as downloads for desktop wallpaper, printable items or other purposes without additional compensation.

To qualify for prizes, the entry must be viewed by the contest judge as demonstrating reasonable and serious intent to meet the goals of the contest, as stated above.

Entry into the contest constitutes acceptance of all rules and conditions. Each entrant is required to complete the entry form, with a declaration that he/she has read, understood and agrees to abide by the rules of the contest.

Anyone found in violation of any of these RULES & REGULATIONS may be eliminated from this contest at anytime and disqualified from any or all future contests. You are responsible for the content of your user information and images.

CONTEST DEADLINE:

All entries must be submitted no later than April 30, 2006. GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) is not responsible for illegible, lost, late, misdirected or corrupted entries or entry materials.  If less than qualifying 25 entries are received, the contest deadline may be extended at the discretion of GoldenNumber.net.
 

CONTEST FINALISTS:

The contest winner will be selected by GoldenNumber.net and will be notified by email.  Only the winner(s) will be notified.  The winning entry will be announced on GoldenNumber.net.  Any and all images submitted for the contest may be displayed on GoldenNumber.net or its affiliated sites and used for any purposes.

Taxes on monetary compensation and prizes are winners' sole responsibility.

Judge's decisions are final.

Incomplete, inaccurate, damaged and/or illegible entries will be disqualified.

By entering this contest and/or accepting any prize in connection herewith, entrant agrees to release and hold harmless GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) and any other such entities affiliated with this promotion, each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, divisions, advertising and promotional agencies, and all of their respective directors, officers, employees and agents (collectively, "Releasees") from and against any and all claims, actions, and liability for any injury, losses, damages, disputes and/or disability resulting from participation in this contest and/or acceptance of any prize (including, without limitation, any travel related thereto).

CONTEST ELIGIBILITY:

The contest is open to any legal U.S. resident, 18 years of age or older. Minors who would like to enter must submit their entries through a parent or adult legal guardian.  Contestants must provide current and valid name and email address information so that the winner can be contacted and the prize can be awarded.  Upon entry into the contest, you grant a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable, sublicense (through multiple tiers) right to exercise all copyright and publicity rights, in any existing or future media, known or unknown, over the material or user data displayed in your contestant listing.

All U.S. federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. This contest is void where prohibited, check with your local laws and ordinances.

Decisions made by GoldenNumber.net (PhiPoint Solutions, LLC) in all matters relating to qualification standards, selection of candidates, and winners shall be deemed final. The judge's decision is final, without exception.

We reserve the right to modify the rules of the contest at any time. In the event of modification of these rules, we will communicate the change on this page and attempt to email all entrants.

PRIVACY POLICY:

Name, address and e-mail information that is submitted with your entry will ONLY be used for purposes of recognizing contestants on this site and sending the prize to the winner(s).  This information will not be shared with others or used for any other purpose.
