Pinky makes a great point that ” ALL things should be question, tested and validated,” but is off base in saying that the article “appealed to people to just accept this and that it doesn’t need more researched” and that the “attitude and advice to others regarding this topic is outright dangerous.” Where does the article say anything at all like that? Paul notes that this is “an opportunity to expand on what we think we understand,” and to “also develop a better understanding about why we thought we understood it in the first place.”

If you get beyond this one “interesting observation” article to read the content of the entire site, you’ll find that this is one of the primary purposes of the site. The About page in fact says, “The overriding goal of the site is simply to share phi, and the experience of seeing the mathematics of design and beauty that appears all around us and within us, and to ponder more deeply the meanings to be found in that.”

Well said, Pinky. I would like to add that if we all accepted whatever resonated with our current level of understanding, then we’d not only be missing out on an opportunity to expand on what we think we understand, but we’d also develop a better understanding about why we thought we understood it in the first place. Religion has its place, but I highly doubt its original purpose was to discourage people from solving problems. I would add that it was only after certain individuals, who aspired to remain in high stations, realized they could use religious beliefs as a way to gain power and maintain control over others, are the ones who would have you believe that some things just “are”, and you should leave it at that. I would appreciate if the person who made the original post would familiarize themselves with the term, “entropy”, as it is one of many consequences when we don’t put any thought into why things behave the way they do.

Golden Ratio “rubbish? LOLOLOL what an amazing thread. First those who were religious believing it proves a Christian “god” exists, and then individuals who are anti-religion who attempted to scorn them by undermining the Golden Ratio.

I agree 100% that critical thinking is imperative and all claims should be validated, and devote a lot of effort to that for everything presented on this site. I’m not sure what you read that you see as an “appeal to people to just accept this and that it doesn’t need more research.”

The article makes several very clear statements as to the tenuous connection to the EKG to the golden ratio, saying “Heartbeat2000 SAUGHT TO STUDY the relationships” and “the VIEWS presented there SUGGEST …” AND “While this is an area that STILL NEEDS RESEARCH AND SCIENTIFIC CORROBORATION, it is an INTERESTING PERSPECTIVE on another POTENTIAL appearance of phi in life.”

I have a hunch that anyone actually reading the words in the article that I’ve bolded here would come away with a pretty good idea that this was just an interesting observation and not an appeal to accept it as scientific fact.

Like your haiku! You are right, neither theists nor atheists can argue about this, it is clear that humans have a system, a complicated set of directions that none of us yet know how to read. We can read some odd lines, like chemicals, digestion, gravity, but that is just one page. There are millions yet to be read, and, the hardest part, understood.
